Be Prepared for Winter Weather by Changing Your Wiper Blades

When the cold weather hits, it can bring along with it snow and ice. If you're unprepared, driving can be quite treacherous. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to get ready for the conditions, including swapping out your wiper blades.

Wiper blades should make good contact with the windshield at all times. The squeegee component should be fairly flexible, so it can adapt to the contours of the glass, and the frame itself should be free of any cracks or damage. At BMW of Anchorage in Anchorage, AK, we recommend that wiper blades should be replaced every six months or whenever they show signs of deterioration.

Some new types of blades specifically made for the winter come with covers over the steel structure. Other wiper blades have a beam style, with a flat piece of steel housed inside plastic. Both of these models were designed to prevent the build-up of snow and ice on the pivot points of wipers.
