Rear-facing seats should be used as long as possible. You can choose an infant car seat if your child is a newborn or small baby, or you can get a convertible seat that can be switched from rear-facing to forward-facing as your child grows. Since this seat can be used in two ways, you can keep it rear-facing longer, which is safer for your child.

Another option is an all-in-one seat, which switches from rear to forward-facing, and then can be used as a booster. Like the convertible seat, it allows you to keep your child rear-facing for as long as possible. Forward-facing seats also come in combination and all-in-one forms.
